The British Motor Corporation (BMC) produced a line of small cars, appropriately called the Mini, from the first part of 1959 until 2000. The Cooper, perhaps the most well-known model in this supermini class, debuted in 1961. Named after John Cooper, the owner of the Cooper Car Company, the Cooper boasted a racing-tuned engine and front disk brakes. These parts were highly unusual for such small vehicles at the time.
Revising the Mini
German automaker BMW bought the BMC and has retained the Mini name throughout. Starting in 2001, the supermini's brand name has been spelled with all capital letters. Redesigned models have more powerful 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines and six-speed transmissions. Buyers may choose between convertible or hatchback models. _Edmunds_ appreciated these improvements and voted the new Cooper the Most Significant Car of 2002.

The supermini class of vehicle is made with economy in mind. A small size means fuel efficiency and less pollution from emissions. Even the smallest supermini will not run as expected without a little tender, loving care. Be sure to change the oil and filters as scheduled and make minor repairs as needed. Superminis such as the Cooper are often owned by city-dwellers due to their economical size. Constant city driving--and braking--may new require brake pads after fewer miles than on larger vehicles.
