Toyota played a part in the explosion of the minivan segment that took place during the 1990s via its Previa, a minivan that was on the market from 1991 to 1997. The Previa featured a mid-engine design and a single sliding door. After its retirement, it was replaced with the Camry-based Toyota Sienna.

In the 1990s, the minivan segment in the United States was ruled by Chrysler with its:

  • Dodge Caravan
  • Chrysler Town and Country
  • Plymouth Voyager.

The Previa was intended to be Toyota's representative in this skirmish for consumer dollars. The Previa was relatively expensive, but nevertheless, it quickly became a common sight on American roads. Unfortunately, the van had a couple of things working against it, namely its relatively poor fuel economy and mid-engine design. In fact, its mid-engine layout caused difficulties when it came to increasing the size of its engine. Beginning in 1994, Toyota addressed this challenge by equiping the Previa with a Roots supercharger that boosted engine power to a more satisfying 160 horsepower. A new generation of the Previa was launched in model year 2000, but this version was never offered for sale in the United States.
